Project overview

European cities are under growing pressure from climate change. To respond, the EU has launched major programmes like the Green Deal and the Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral Cities, encouraging cities to work together, share knowledge, and lead the shift toward more sustainable futures.

Today, many cities try to use digital tools to understand how their environment works: how heat, traffic, pollution, water, or green spaces change over time. But most cities still struggle because their data is scattered, outdated, or hard to interpret. This makes it difficult for decision‑makers and citizens to clearly understand what is happening or how different choices might shape the future.

GENeCITY aims to solve this by creating a shared digital system that helps cities combine their information in one place and use explainable and trustworthy AI to explore future scenarios. Instead of requiring high-tech expertise, the system is designed so any city, big or small, can use it.

The platform turns complex climate policies into clear, measurable goals and helps planners test “what‑if” scenarios, such as: What happens if we add more green areas? Reduce traffic? Improve water management? It also invites citizens into the process, making planning more transparent and inclusive.

GENeCITY’s goal is to help cities design climate‑neutral, liveable futures using easy‑to‑understand digital tools. It supports collaboration between governments, researchers, businesses, and communities, enabling everyone to co‑create better urban environments.

Project objectives

Understand cities’ needs by working with local stakeholders in five European cities to improve climate planning and decision-making

Empower communities and partnerships by bringing together citizens, policymakers, researchers, and businesses

Explore future scenarios to understand the impacts of different climate and urban planning decisions

Improve city insights through generative AI, explainable forecasting and scenario modelling

Bring FAIR, interoperable data together from different sources to create a clear picture of how cities work and evolve

Contribute to Europe’s climate goals by testing and scaling solutions that support climate-neutral and sustainable cities

Connect cities through a shared framework that can be adapted and replicated across Europe

Turn climate goals into action by helping cities set clear, measurable, and realistic targets

Support citizen participation through interactive and easy-to-use visual tools

Build trustworthy, explainable, and energy-efficient AI tools
