Murcia is undergoing a major transition towards climate-neutral mobility. As the city grows, it faces challenges related to traffic congestion, transport emissions, air pollution, and increasing heat stress. At the same time, Murcia has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, strengthen sustainable transport networks, and create more attractive public spaces.
Achieving these goals requires better integration of mobility, environmental, and urban data, allowing policymakers to understand how different interventions affect traffic flows, emissions, public health, and quality of life. Supporting informed and transparent decision-making is therefore essential to accelerating the city’s climate transition.
GENeCITY will help Murcia advance its digital transformation by bringing together mobility, environmental, and urban data into a unified planning environment. Information from traffic cameras, air quality stations, meteorological sensors, sound monitoring systems, and existing city platforms will be integrated to provide a real-time understanding of urban conditions.
Using a Local Digital Twin and AI-supported scenario modelling, the city will be able to explore the potential impacts of different mobility and climate adaptation measures before they are implemented. Planned scenarios include the creation of cool corridors to reduce heat stress and the introduction of on-demand shuttle services to improve sustainable mobility options.
The project will also engage citizens, public authorities, mobility providers, businesses, and community organisations through co-design workshops and digital participation tools. These activities will help identify priorities, evaluate future scenarios, and support evidence-based decisions that reflect local needs.
The Murcia pilot will demonstrate how integrated data and digital planning tools can support more sustainable and climate-friendly mobility systems. The project aims to engage citizens, civil society organisations, and policymakers and municipal staff in shaping the city’s mobility future.
GENeCITY will provide Murcia with advanced monitoring, visualisation, and scenario-testing capabilities, helping the city assess strategies to reduce transport emissions, improve air quality, mitigate urban heat, and enhance mobility services. The solutions developed in Murcia will also be shared with Sofia and additional replicator cities, supporting wider adoption of sustainable urban mobility approaches across Europe.
